Ants, electrical powerlines, the human brain, music, and language. Is there a commonality? They are all genuinely powerful, and perhaps their connection can give us insight into the things we sometimes don’t realize we experience everyday.
Sometimes I stop to ponder the profoundness of things. Like ants. They are small creatures of course, but how small is a baby ant? I can’t claim I know the science, but there must be baby ants as well as the ones that get absolutely huge. I even saw flying ants for the first time last week, early October. I feel like I could relate with an ant, they carry a lot of burden, carrying items that are larger even than themselves. And they work in teams, and always seem to know their way home, despite their seemingly erratic and unpredictable paths. (if an old game called SimAnt taught me anything, they leave a trail in pheromone or scent perhaps). I have great fondness for ants, and aunts, for that matter. There have been a lot of very strong women in my life, and they all have their nuances and gifts they’ve imparted me with as a man growing up. I recon it’s the motherly side, or the human spirit, and that’s ultimately what connects us, so why not also share some love with those other women that guide, correct, or otherwise aid you?
And back to powerlines. We need connections, and with an ever-increasing usage of electrical equipment, with new appliances, toys and tools coming out each day – have you ever stopped to consider where the power comes from? Do you notice the cabling, do you remember the wind or water that generates it? We’ve even invented a way to generate power from waves. Plates can lay on the ocean surface and translate the motivational current of the waves into batteries that could generate clean, renewable energy. And like powerlines or ants – in our brains, one connection leads to another, and the current, messages, or even experiences move along. This shows that although sometimes power comes from outside, from nature, being outside in the serene; the oneness of everything moving in tandem in an unpredictable, yet relatable and unique way each moment – our brains are uniquely coded and powerful enough to translate massive amounts of data into a wholeness of experience. And although none of these subjects can be fully tracked or predicted, you have to wonder, is it the study that is the problem?
Then there’s music. The lifeblood of my sanity sometimes. That’s one subject I love to talk about. A song can be entrancing, powerful, soothing, funny, delinquent, or just brave. And isn’t it funny how they connect as well? One thought, one song, one lyric can blend into another and create a whole soundtrack for a period of time even though when studied independantly, they are rather unconnected. Maybe that’s a little like us, as we blend the things that we experience into a trail for ourselves – again, like ants, powerlines and music.
And then language too. I know you already understand that that’s a blessing in itself. I know there’s purpose for every person that speaks into my life, and I purpose to give back wholeheartedly to those who have supported, graced, or otherwise loved or challenged me. Sometimes you or I might forget about science when it comes to God’s gifts, but there’s definitely some mystery in the ways we end up connected to the people in our lives. That itself could be a blessing too, if you think of it! Surprises are scary, but sometimes that little shock snaps us into a new reality when we feel otherwise alone or disconnected.
Have a wonderful thanksgiving everyone… men, women, children, friends, family, service workers, professionals, artists, builders, cleaners, cooks and otherwise. We are all connected. Thank you to the people also who are missing loved ones, hurt, distressed and/or alone. You guys are the strongest of us all, and your resilience and strength lays the foundations for what our society needs to make change for the betterment of everyone. Myself included. Thank you and happy thanksgiving. We have a lot to be thankful for.
